Uno dei più grandi centri per richiedenti asilo in Europa si trova nelle ex case dei soldati americani a Sigonella, la più grande base militare del Mediterraneo. Il titolo (Homes for America) si riferisce al lavoro pubblicato da Dan Graham su Arts Magazine nel dicembre del 1966.
Inoltre, il paesaggio documentato fa riferimento alle Township fotografate da David Goldblatt. Entrambi i riferimenti contengono significati connotativi e suggestioni che riflettono sul significato della cittadinanza nell’era della globalizzazione.
“The Hub of the Med” è una base aerea navale della Marina americana a Sigonella in Sicilia, Italia. Si trova a circa 40 km a sud dell’Etna. Grazie alla sua posizione vicino al centro del Mar Mediterraneo, il NASSIG è il secondo comando di sicurezza più grande della Marina, secondo solo a quello situato presso la Naval Support Activity Bahrain. Nel 2011, la Marina decide di porre fine al contratto di locazione per gli alloggi familiari in Sicilia, e chiude l’area residenziale di Mineo. L’area residenziale di Mineo è stata affittata da Pizzarotti & Co. al governo italiano come centro abitativo per richiedenti asilo, molti dei quali rifugiati dalle rivolte della “primavera araba” in Tunisia e in altri paesi del Nord Africa. Da allora è diventata famosa tra i media locali e tra gli attivisti, i quali sostengono che nella struttura vengano ospitate troppe persone in una stessa unità, e di conseguenza ci sia scarso accesso all’assistenza sanitaria.

One of the largest centers for asylum seekers in Europe is located in the former homes for the American soldiers stationed at Sigonella, which is itself the largest military base in the Mediterranean. The title (Homes for America) refers to the work published by Dan Graham on Arts Magazine, December 1966. Also, the documented landscape references the Townships photographed by David Goldblatt. Both references contain connotative meanings and suggestions that reflect on the meaning of citizenship in the era of globalization.
Naval Air Station Sigonella “The Hub of the Med” is a U.S. Navy installation in Sicily, Italy. It is located at some 40 km south of Mount Etna. Because of its location near the center of the Mediterranean Sea, NASSIG is the Navy’s second largest security command, second only to that located at Naval Support Activity Bahrain. In 2011, after the Navy considered ending its lease for family housing in Sicily, it had closed the Mineo housing area. Mineo housing area was leased by Pizzarotti & Co. to the Italian government as a housing center for asylum seekers, many of them refugees from the “Arab spring” revolts in Tunisia and other North African countries. It has since grown notorious in local media and among immigration advocates, who say the facility puts too many people in units, with little access to health care and little progress on their cases.

Housing inspectors make rounds within the complex on a daily basis. If, during these inspections, they notice that residents are not in compliance with any rules and regulations, they may issue either a “friendly reminder” or a “violation notice”.

Federico Baronello è nato nel 1968, vive e lavora a Catania.
La sua ricerca si concentra essenzialmente sulla documentazione degli effetti della globalizzazione nell’area del Mediterraneo e sulla tecnologia come agente per la costruzione di nuove forme culturali; strumenti e materiali di lavoro preferiti sono la fotografia analitica e la progettazione di strutture espositive, con sporadici sconfinamenti nell’esercizio critico della scrittura.
Tra i lavori più recenti, la serie fotografica risultata dalla residenza al parco botanico della Fondazione Radicepura nel 2017 ha preavvisato alcune delle tematiche precipue dell’attuale emergenza della pandemia: La riproduzione dei paesaggi delle coltivazioni industriali di tipiche specie botaniche mediterranee, minacciate da batteri e parassiti (punteruolo rosso e Xylella), indicava per l’appunto l’insita fragilità di un sistema produttivo apparentemente inconfutabile.
Per diversi anni, dal 1999, Baronello è stato membro di *Candy Factory, collettivo internazionale con base in Giappone, collaborando con gli artisti Takuji Kogo e Mike Bode con i quali ha sviluppato opere multimediali che esplorano gli effetti della globalizzazione nello spazio quotidiano.
Baronello ha inoltre collaborato con importanti enti di ricerca come i Laboratori Nazionali del Sud dell’Istituto Italiano di Fisica Nucleare (INFN-LNS) e l’Istituto di Microelettronica e Microsistemi del Consiglio Italiano delle Ricerche (IMM- CNR).
Per l’INFN-LNS ha documentato le missioni sperimentali di NEMO, prima implementazione italiana di KM3Net, il progetto di infrastruttura di ricerca europea per un gigantesco telescopio Cherenkov da costruire sui fondali del Mediterraneo.
Questa attività è al contempo parte della ricerca artistica di Baronello, ed è stata spesso abbinata alla documentazione di alcuni aspetti del fenomeno delle migrazioni dai paesi MENA, condotte con imbarcazioni di fortuna verso la Sicilia.

Federico Baronello, was born in 1968, lives and works in Catania (IT).
He choses media as analytical photography and the design of exhibition structures, with sporadic overruns in the critical exercise of writing, to essentially focus on the documentation of the effects of globalization in the Mediterranean area and on technology as an agent for the construction of new cultural forms.
Among the most recent works, the photographic series resulting from the residence at the botanical park of the Radicepura Foundation in 2017 has disclosed some of the main topics related to the current emergency of the pandemic: The reproduction of the landscapes of industrial cultivations of typical Mediterranean botanical species, threatened by bacteria and parasites (red weevil and Xylella), precisely pointed to the fragility intrinsic also to an apparently irrefutable production system.
Since 1999, Baronello has been a member of *Candy Factory, an international collective based in Japan, collaborating with artists Takuji Kogo and Mike Bode with whom he has developed multimedia works that explore the effects of globalization in everyday space.
Baronello has also collaborated with science research centres such as the Southern National Laboratories of the Italian Institute of Nuclear Physics (INFN-LNS) and the Institute of Microelectronics and Microsystems of the Italian Research Council (IMM-CNR). For the INFN-LNS he documented the experimental missions of NEMO, the first Italian implementation of KM3Net, the European research infrastructure project for a gigantic Cherenkov telescope to be built on the Mediterranean seabed.
This activity was also an inherent part of Baronello’s artistic research as it has often been combined with the documentation of some aspects of the phenomenon of migrations from MENA countries, carried out with makeshift boats to Sicily.
