UNA GROSSA NUVOLA OSCURO’ IL CIELO.
A BIG CLOUD DARKENED IN THE SKY…

L’elemento aria, la dimensione del volo, prendono consistenza, materia fotografica, dopo una serie di esperienze vissute in prima persona, sperimentate dopo anni di narrazioni familiari (figlio di un pilota), di analisi di archivi storici, di riflessioni sulla diversa prospettiva aerea, l’angolazione che lo sguardo assume dall’alto, visione “altra e alta”.
Osservando il paesaggio contemporaneo dall’alto, alterando la visione prospettica, a misura d’uomo, la natura e l’architettura, assumono le sembianze di un circuito elettrico, un ordinato transistor, schema di moduli metallici che scintillano al sole, piccolo agglomerato, costituito da moduli, come elementi di un’architettura ordinata e consequenziale.
Dall’alto tutto appare possibile, un flusso spazio-temporale parallelo, in linea con una diversa visione fatta di spostamenti repentini e di transiti in “non luoghi” che a furia di essere frequentati divengono gli unici possibili per la visione, per osservare il tempo al presente.

The element of air, the dimension of flight, takes on consistency, photographic material, after a series of first-hand experiences, tested after years of family narratives (son of a pilot), of analysis of historical archives, of reflections on the different perspective aerial, the angle that the gaze takes from above, an “other and high” vision.
Observing the contemporary landscape from above, altering the perspective vision, on a human scale, nature and architecture take on the appearance of an electrical circuit, an orderly transistor, a scheme of metal modules that sparkle in the sun, a small agglomeration, made up of modules, as elements of an orderly and consequential architecture.
From above everything appears possible, a parallel space-time flow, in line with a different vision made of sudden movements and transits in “non-places” which by dint of being frequented become the only ones possible for vision, for observing time to the present.

Come spesso accade nella meditazione, un accadimento, un’esperienza imprevista, squarcia il velo del pensiero, ribalta il percorso iniziato e riconduce il cammino su altre direzioni. Improvvisamente, apparve in video il volto di un giovane americano, figlio di un pilota del Vietnam.
Il volto del giovane, ritratto nei primi anni settanta, sfumò, lasciando lo schermo ad un signore maturo che leggeva con commozione alcune bianche lettere; erano lettere di guerra, corrispondenze che il padre spediva giornalmente alla famiglia dopo le missioni, dopo aver bombardato.
La descrizione dei luoghi e delle azioni aveva un carattere quasi turistico, confidenziale; al mattino si bombardava e al pomeriggio si scriveva, ogni giorno, per mesi, sino all’abbattimento del pilota-padre.
Il verde della terra, i campi, la speranza del ritorno a casa, riportava ad una dimensione, privata, umana, ma la forza di fuoco che arrivava dal cielo era catastrofica e il destino silenzioso dipendeva dalla quantità di morte che si rovesciava dal cielo. Improvvisamente, il progetto prende un’altra direzione, assume il senso del monito, della storia, di una visione altra, una prospettiva diversa dei cieli e dei destini dell’uomo……

As often happens in meditation, an event, an unexpected experience, tears the veil of thought, overturns the path begun and leads the journey back in other directions. Suddenly, the face of a young American, the son of a Vietnam pilot, appeared on video.
The face of the young man, portrayed in the early seventies, faded, leaving the screen to a mature gentleman who was reading some white letters with emotion; they were war letters, correspondence that the father sent daily to the family after the missions, after the bombing.
The description of the places and actions had an almost touristy, confidential character; in the morning we bombed and in the afternoon we wrote, every day, for months, until the pilot-father was shot down.
The green of the earth, the fields, the hope of returning home, brought us back to a private, human dimension, but the force of fire that came from the sky was catastrophic and the silent destiny depended on the amount of death that poured from the sky. Suddenly, the project takes another direction, it takes on the sense of warning, of history, of another vision, a different perspective of the heavens and the destinies of man…

Carmelo Nicosia nasce a Catania nel 1960.
Laurea in Chimica Farmaceutica con una tesi sulla “Fotochimica degli elementi”. Fondatore della Scuola di Fotografia ABA CT nel 2008. Direttore Accademia delle Belli Arti Catania dal 2006 al 2012. Più volte consigliere di amministrazione nella medesima Accademia. Consulente fotografico di vari enti nazionali e internazionali.
Tiene regolarmente corsi e seminari su “Analisi e Progettazione nella fotografia contemporanea”, con una specializzazione in Antropologia visuale, presso università e fondazioni, italiane e straniere. Dal 2000 è impegnato in numerosi progetti internazionali, editoriali ed espositivi a carattere socio antropologico, con particolare attenzione ai temi dell’identità, della memoria, dei fenomeni collettivi, al rapporto con la storia. Dal 2010 ha attivato il progetto Parola-Visione con una serie di ricerche che analizzano il rapporto tra fotografia e scrittura.
Carmelo Nicosia è considerato uno dei maggiori autori della nuova fotografia italiana, anello di congiunzione tra la tradizione socio antropologica e la ricerca nei nuovi media. Le sue opere sono conservate nelle più importanti collezioni italiane e straniere ed esposte in Europa e America. Direttore artistico della fondazione Oelle dal 2017 al 2023.Attualmente ricopre il ruolo di direttore della scuola di fotografia della accademia di belle arti di Catania. Insignito nel 2023 della Laurea Honoris Causa dalla ABA CATANZARO.

Carmelo Nicosia was born in Catania in 1960.
He gradueted in Pharmaceutical Chemistry with a thesis on the “Photochemistry of the elements”. Founder of the ABA CT School of Photography in 2008. Director of the Catania Academy of Fine Arts from 2006 to 2012. Board member several times in the same Academy. Photographic consultant for various national and international bodies.
He regularly holds courses and seminars on “Analysis and Planning in Contemporary Photography”, with a specialization in Visual Anthropology, at Italian and Foreign Universities and Foundations. Since 2000 he has been involved in numerous international, editorial and exhibition projects of a socio-anthropological nature, with particular attention to the themes of identity, memory, collective phenomena and the relationship with history. Since 2010 he has activated the Parola-Visione project with a series of researches that analyze the relationship between photography and writing.
Carmelo Nicosia is considered one of the major authors of new Italian photography, a link between the socio-anthropological tradition and research in new media. His works are preserved in the most important Italian and foreign collections and exhibited in Europe and America. Artistic Director of the Oelle Foundation from 2017 to 2023. He currently holds the role of director of the photography school of the Fine Arts Academy of Catania. Awarded an Honorary Degree from the ABA CATANZARO in 2023.
